Anybody here make the mistake of plugging your amp into a surge protector?

I did on the very first day that I brought my hi-fi home.  It restricts current, which in effect, restricts dynamics.

If you are going to use a power conditioner, buy one that does not restrict current.  The cheap one that came with your computer is not one that you want to plug your hi-fi into.

Though to add to that, I'd say you want something there to protect that expensive investment you just bought. Check the power coming into your home, your cable line if its connected to your home theater, etc. A good power conditioner can help quite a bit.

Yes, you should put a power conditioner in line as protection, but don't scimp. Go as high -end as your budget lets you and try to get a ps that differentiates between pc power and audio/video power.  I used to work for Monster cable and we sold outrageously expensive units -- but they were great if you could afford them. Thank Gopod for my employee discount. heh
